Case Study Week 2 - An Ethical Dilemma The biopharmaceutical company needs to hire two new research scientists. The lowest salary the company can pay a new research scientist is 135,000 per scientist. The business is not a well-known establishment within the state of South Dakota. A female scientist interviews for one of the vacant position, but supposedly does not possess â€Å"fresh ideas†. Yet she is offered a job with a salary of $105,000, which is below the lowest salary the company predicted it would offer for the position. A short time later, a male candidate who was a recent college graduate interviews for the second open scientist position. It is believed that the male applicant truly exceeds the requirements established for the vacancies. The applicant seems to be in high demand and has job offers from a couple other businesses. The company assumes that the male candidate’s credentials make him a potentially valuable asset, and should therefore be offered a job as soon as possible. The Issues The company’ s reasoning for wanting employees who had recently completed graduate work was to bring new fresh ideas to a company whose staff had been employed for a considerable amount of time. This appears to be code for the company has a significant amount of older employees. These breakthroughs range from new diseases prevention methods, to new cures for previously â€Å"terminal† illnesses. So, because our society is constantly changing, evolving, and improving, it is absolutely necessary to keep up with the awareness of these new discoveries. One disorder that has existed for years, but has recently gained a lot of awareness is Autism. Autism is defined as â€Å"a disorder in brain development that ultimately affects its victims’ everyday social interaction† (Autismspeaks.org) . Signs and symptoms of Autism are usually shown in early childhood, and are easily detected by parents, if they are aware. Personal College Narrative Essay I’ve never really liked describing myself, because I never knew where to begin. So where do I start? Do I start when I was a baby, because we all know that’s the best years, or do I start at high school, that’s when I found out who I really was. I won’t be telling the cute childhood stories or even my breakthrough in high school. I will be explaining why I’m at Campbell University, and why I plan to stay here. Campbell University was never the college I thought I’d be attending. I had other dreams of going to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, but that fell short when I didn’t get accepted. So I had to come up with plan B, and Campbell University was never part of the plan. I applied to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and I got in. So I was planning to attend UNCP but in high school I was in a college prep class called AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) and we went on a typical college tour. This time our college tour was to Campbell University and I knew nothing about it. When we arrived I loved the campus, everything about it from the energy to the people. My favorite color is orange, so seeing orange all over campus automatically put me in good spirits. So I applied, I got in and plus I got scholarships. So my love of orange and scholarships is the reason why I’m at Campbell University. In my AVID program we focused a lot on preparing us for college. From freshman year to senior year the whole curriculum was preparing for college and how to succeed in academics. So when I came to Campbell, I knew exactly what to expect. I feel extremely confident in my performance academic wise. In high school I did very well in memorization, I hope I can still use this strength in college. The one thing about myself I admire is how outgoing I am. I’ve come a long way from being a shy little girl to the young woman I am today. It took a long journey but I made it and it’s the favorite thing about me. Another unique thing about me is I’m very forgiving. Some people have told me I’m too nice, but to me that’s just impossible. I like the fact I have an ability to get along with almost anybody. The one thing I’m most excited about in college is the chance of a new beginning. I love that I can just start all over again. In high school I didn’t live the life I wanted to live, so now I have the chance to do things my way. The only problem is I’m still nervous about this new adventure. What if things don’t go my way? What if I don’t make friends? These are the things I wonder about. With this new journey in front of me, I know there’s plenty in store. I have my whole life ahead of me and it starts right now. Here at Campbell University is where a new chapter of my life as started, and I’m prepared and ready to have a good time.
